Frequent Sleep-Wake Cycles in Dogs

Dogs experience far more sleep–wake cycles each night than humans do. A study observed that during an eight-hour sleep period, each dog had an average of 23 cycles. Each cycle lasts about 21 minutes, with 16 minutes of sleep and 5 minutes of being awake. This frequent shifting means your dog is likely to wake up multiple times during the night, possibly including at 5AM.

Dogs Are Alert to Certain Sounds

Even when asleep, dogs can respond to specific sounds. Researchers played recordings of barking, glass breaking, rowdy voices, buses, and motorbikes. Dogs were most likely to react to barking sounds, especially those of other dogs. They responded to 29% of sound recordings, with barking being the most triggering. This suggests your dog may wake up at 5AM if it hears another dog barking nearby, even if it’s not fully awake.

Group Sleep Increases Activity

Dogs sleeping in groups show more nighttime activity. When two dogs sleep together, their sleep–wake cycles often align. This means if one dog wakes up, the other may follow. If your dog shares a space with another dog, this synchronized waking could explain why both dogs are active at 5AM, possibly disturbing you.

Stress Can Disrupt Sleep Patterns

One dog in the study showed no active sleep and had many cycles on her first night, which researchers linked to stress. This suggests that changes in environment or routine—like a new home or separation—can affect your dog’s sleep. If your dog is stressed, it may wake more often, including at early morning hours.

Sleep Patterns Vary by Living Conditions

Dogs that sleep outdoors in fenced yards have longer sleep periods—about 19 minutes—compared to those free to roam, who sleep only 14 minutes on average. Dogs with more freedom may be more likely to wander or respond to outside stimuli, leading to more frequent awakenings. If your dog sleeps outside, this could contribute to early morning wake-ups.
