Dogs can develop diarrhea for many reasons, including eating spoiled food, sudden diet changes, food allergies, or mild infections. Safe Home Remedies for Mild Diarrhea

Other safe options include cottage cheese, cooked macaroni, oatmeal, and soft-boiled eggs. Feed small meals 3–4 times a day for the first two days. Canned or cooked pumpkin is especially helpful—it absorbs water in the colon and firms up stools. For a medium-sized dog, try 1–2 tablespoons of pumpkin per meal, mixed with food.

Hydration and Electrolytes Are Key

Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so encourage your dog to drink plenty of water. If your dog refuses water, try adding a low-salt bouillon cube to make it more appealing. You can also offer a diluted electrolyte solution like Pedialyte—mix it half with water. Special canine electrolyte products like K9 Thirst Quencher are also available and can help maintain hydration.

When to Use Over-the-Counter Aids

Pepto-Bismol and Kaopectate are safe for dogs when used as directed and can help slow intestinal motility. Slippery elm bark is another natural option that coats and soothes the digestive tract, similar to Pepto-Bismol. For homeopathic support, Arsenicum (12C every 6 hours) may help with foul-smelling diarrhea and vomiting. Lycopodium (30C once daily) is used for chronic cases, and Podophyllum (30C every 6 hours) works well for acute mild diarrhea with mucus.

When to See a Vet Immediately

Seek veterinary care right away if your dog’s diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours, includes blood or black, tarry stools, or is paired with vomiting, fever, weakness, or depression. Chronic diarrhea lasting over three weeks also requires professional evaluation. If your dog has recently changed food or eaten something unusual, a vet can help rule out serious causes like infections or food sensitivities.
